Could Bethune Help Tonga

Tonga says the underwater volcano and subsequent tsunami caused an “unprecedented disaster“, in the government’s first update since a volcanic eruption triggered a tsunami.  First aircraft observations show whole island communities covered in volcanic ash.  What could CCGS Bethune have done?

CCGS Norman Bethune, if she were available, could have set sail, before the disaster even happened.  Warning eruptions had been recorded for days before the final devastating explosion.  If Bethune sailed 3 days before the main eruption she would arrive in about three days after . Bethune would coordinate her efforts with activity already underway.  Bethune would probably anchor off of a smaller island not currently being effectively supported.  Bethune could then provide complete relief and aid.  Primarily, Bethune could provide electricity with her onboard generator and fresh water, Both, provided to shore through a floating umbilical cord from the ship to shore.  Air rescue, and hospital services would be immediately available as would supply lines to internal island communities.

Of course, Bethune can’t actually do any of these things because the Canadian Government hasn’t built her.

Canada needs CCGS Bethune and her sister ship CCGS Lucille Teasdale-Corti.  Named after two well respected Canadian Doctors who cared for those who needed them.
